From temp to team leader: How to progress your career

Temp to Team Leader

Progress starts on day one.

I still remember my own first day at work, don’t we all! A mix of nerves and excitement – that day lit the fuse for everything that followed – because in most industries, progress doesn’t wait. I’ve seen forklift drivers become site managers and temps earn their own offices, all because they treated day one like a trial run for day one hundred.

At Rapid we back that mindset with fast placements, clear feedback, and managers who spot potential before you say “lunch break”. If you’re starting as a temp this week, lean in. A few smart habits and a sharp eye for opportunity can turn today’s shift into tomorrow’s career.

Let me show you how.

1. See your role as more than ‘just temp work’

Treat your job like it’s permanent – even if it’s not (yet). Being professional, punctual and positive from day one sends a strong message. Managers notice people who take their work seriously, no matter the job title or contract length. If there’s a chance to stick around, you’ll already be at the top of the list.

2. Show up – and step up

Turning up on time and doing what’s asked of you is the baseline. But those who go further – offering help, asking questions, or suggesting improvements – are the ones who stand out. Leadership roles often go to the people who take responsibility without being asked.

3. Make yourself easy to rely on

Trust is everything. If your team knows they can count on you to do a job well – and do it every time – you’re already showing leadership potential. Consistency matters more than being the loudest or the fastest. Being dependable is one of the simplest, strongest ways to grow your career.

4. Learn the ropes (and then some)

You don’t need to know everything on day one. But staying curious, picking things up quickly and being open to learning new tasks will put you ahead. If there’s training offered, take it. If someone’s willing to show you how something works, watch closely. Skills lead to opportunities.

5. Be a team player

Workplaces run smoother when people support each other – and that’s exactly what leaders do. Helping others, keeping a good attitude and being someone people enjoy working with will make you stand out for the right reasons. You don’t need a badge to lead by example.

6. Ask about your future

If you’re enjoying the role and want to stay longer or move up, say so. Sometimes the only thing standing between you and a promotion is letting someone know you’re interested. Most managers appreciate people who show initiative – and you might be surprised how often that simple conversation leads to new chances.

7. Stick with it

Not every temp role will turn into a full-time job – but plenty do. Even when one job ends, the experience and skills you’ve gained carry over to the next one. If you keep showing up, keep learning, and keep aiming higher, it’s only a matter of time before the right role opens up.

Your next step starts here

Progression doesn’t have to be complicated. Show up, work hard, learn fast, and speak up – and you’ll put yourself in the best position to grow. From temp to team leader might sound like a big leap, but it’s one many of our candidates make.

You could be next.
