Solving EPC’s Recruitment Shortfall

The Situation
English Provender Company (EPC) faced a significant recruitment challenge, requiring over 100 staff daily and dealing with 80 unfilled permanent positions. Their existing recruitment provider offered little insight into the reasons for high staff turnover and struggled to attract top talent for permanent roles. To address this, EPC turned to Rapid to quickly fill the vacancies and attract the best candidates.
Rapid’s Model of Change
Here’s a snapshot of what our team did to transform EPC’s recruitment strategy:
- Introduced a personalised Temp to Perm (T2P) recruitment model that allowed EPC to fill their headcount with staff who were already on site and part trained
- Introduced an innovative transport solution (from various towns including Reading, Southampton and Swindon) to increase the size of the labour pool and ensure employees could reach EPC’s semi-rural location
- Working collaboratively with EPC to improve company culture and the wider public perception of the business and employer brand
- Collaboratively created a set of corporate recruitment and induction assets (including video) to attracting new staff and providing induction details
- Implemented a ‘from day one’ personal welcome program from managers
- Introduced regular staff review and welfare check-ins
- Introduced attendance and performance bonuses
- Created bespoke reports to allow EPC to track performance against market challenges
- Optimised EPC’s lengthy interview processes to allow for quicker hires
- Instrumental in implementing company-wide strategy meetings to encourage buy-in and involve the day-to-day operations managers
“Rapid approached our situation with fresh ideas and in addition to introducing strategies which were unique to our business, they drew on their market experience to suggest adopting some of the successful practices they had previously implemented with other clients. Their transport service has allowed us to access a much larger pool of staff and their approach to building a reliable temporary workforce has helped us to fill numerous permanent vacancies. Over 90% of the temporary staff introduced by Rapid who have accepted permanent roles with our company, have gone on to successfully complete their probationary period.”
